How to take care of your eyes

Good eyesight is vital to a full and happy life, imagine being without it, unable to see the face of a loved one, or a beautiful sunrise. So it makes sense that you want to keep your eyes in tip top condition, here at James Doyle, Opticians in Wilmslow, Cheshire we have complied this series of eye care tips, which we hope will help you keep your eyes in great shape.

Don’t take up smoking.

You probably already know that there are many serious dangers related to cigarette smoking. One of the less-known dangers is developing Age-related Macular Degeneration(AMD). Several scientific studies have shown that the patients who did smoke were much more likely to develop AMD than those who didn’t smoke. Just another reason not to start smoking or to quit today.

Are you already a smoker ?

If so, stop. Smoking increases the chance that you will have problems with your eyes, like cataracts and other degenerative eye conditions. It can be hard to quit, but never stop trying, the latest e-cigarettes have proved very effective for those who have tried and failed to quit in the past, so, even if you’ve failed before, you still have a good chance of being able to quit in the future.

Choosing the best eye Doctor

When selecting an eye care professional, do not skimp when it comes to doing your homework on each prospective doctor’s qualifications. Check their educational background, certifications and licenses to ensure that everything is as represented. Doing these things will help you feel confident when it comes to entrusting the health of your eyes to someone new.

Build healthy eyes from the inside

What you eat is very important to the health of your eyes. A diet that is rich in vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids is helpful in maintaining good eyesight. Many vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and broccoli are rich in vitamin A. Fish and nuts can provide you with the omega-3 that you need.

Contact lens wearers

http://www.jamesdoyleopticians.co.uk/
If you wear contacts, you must follow your eye doctor’s instruction carefully. If your eyes feel irritated when you put them in, it can mean that your contact lenses are damaged. Another reason could be that you are suffering from an eye problem that is just beginning to form. We would always recommend that you see your eyecare professional right away to prevent a more serious problem.

Stay hydrated

If you want your eyes to look and feel their best, drink lots of water. The more hydrated you are, the less you will suffer from dark circles. Hydrated skin doesn’t allow the blood vessels to show, ensuring that your raccoon eyes (dark circles) become a thing of the past.

Screen time

If you use a computer often, you should understand that it can impact your eye health. Try and build in 10 minutes in every hour when you come away from your screen.  If you feel your eyes becoming dry, blink more frequently and mention your screen usage to your Optician during your regular eye screening. You can also try to reduce the amount of glare on your monitor. You can also purchase an anti-glare computer screen. Keep the monitor at the same level as your eyes. Your eyes should look down the screen.

If you would like any further help with your eyes, please contact us on 01625 548848 to book an appointment, or visit our website.

Dispensing with an Optician

Here at James Doyle Opticians in Wilmslow, we value our patients eyesight, which is why we are delighted that you have trusted us to test your eyes, something we have been doing for over 20 years.

However, your eye test is only a part of the total care we offer you, our customers. Equally important is the dispensing of your glasses, should you need them.

There are three key components to creating your ideal pair of glasses, whereas most of us only consider the first.

These are:-
  1. Your choice of frames
  2. The type of lenses to put into your chosen frames
  3. What, if any, lens coating you need applying
Our expertise allows us to direct you to the best combination of frames and lenses, optimising your vision, not something that many of us consider when we first arrive to have our eyes tested.

The first two choices are closely linked. Depending upon your prescription, not all frames will be suitable for the lenses you will need, cheaper thicker lenses will make you eyes appear magnified and cannot be fitted properly into all frames.

The thinner the lenses you are able to choose, the better the appearance of your eyes, and the lighter the glasses will be, making wearing them significantly  more comfortable.

So is it important that the Optician who tests your sight then dispenses your glasses ?

It is highly recommended that the eye test and the dispensing are performed within the same practice, but it is not essential.

However, here in Wilmslow, we pride ourselves on having not just the most up to date eye testing equipment, but also the best equipment for creating your lenses.

Once you have trusted us with the care of your eyes, we take every aspect of your vision very seriously, and bring the same level of care and expertise into dispensing your glasses as we do to calculating your prescription.

Here at James Doyle Opticians in Wilmslow we have invested in a state of the art machine, called The Impressionist and created by leading lens manufacturer Rodenstock, which has the appearance of a high tech mirror.

It is in fact a scanner which creates a completely bespoke lens blueprint for you, in combination with the frames you have selected.  This blueprint is then sent directly to the lens manufacturers where they set about creating your lenses from scratch.  Whereas most high street practices will take a standard lens and adapt it to your prescription.

The result of these bespoke lenses is to maximise your vision, they have been called High Definition lenses, due to the clarity they create.

So our expertise in eye care extends way beyond being able to give you the best possible eye test into our ability to create the perfect vision solution for you.

For an appointment call us today on 01625 548 848 or email the practice via this link.

State of the art equipment arrives at Wilmslow Opticians

Here at James Doyle Opticians in Wilmslow Cheshire, we have recently installed the most up to date scanning equipment for your eyes, an Ocular Coherence Tomographer or OCT for short.

We are one of the first opticians to have this technology in the North West of England, until now OCT have been primarily used in macular clinics within eye hospitals.

As you will appreciate, this it will enable us to take our patient care to the next level.

OCT  is a painless, non-contact, non-invasive imaging technique, used to obtain high resolution cross-sectional and three dimensional images of the retina, cornea and anterior chamber of the eye.

It is effectively ‘optical ultrasound’, imaging reflections from deep within the eye tissue to provide high quality cross-sectional images.

Using our OCT equipment will enable us to see below the surface of your retina and pick up on changes long before they become problems, meaning patients will be referred for treatment at the earliest stages of a condition, leading to the best long term prognosis.

We would recommend OCT scans for the following groups of people

  • If you are over 60
  • If you are over 40 and shortsighted
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If you have diabetes
  • If you have any retinal abnormalities
  • If there is any family history of eye problems
Of course, anyone can have a scan even if it is just for your own interest

Remember up to 80% of vision impairment and blindness can be prevented by early detection.

The scan only takes a few minutes and can usually be done during your eye examination. It is totally safe, as the OCT uses visible light to scan the retina. Anyone can have an OCT scan done. It is totally safe, painless and nothing touches your eye.

Here are just some of the conditions OCT screening as part of your eye examination can help us monitor
  • Macular drusen [dry AMD],
  • Wet macular degeneration,
  • macular hole,
  • vitreous detachment,
  • epiretinal membrane formation,
  • corneal thickness,
  • anterior chamber angle,
  • retinal naevus,
  • retinal nerve fibre thickness.
AMD is the most common cause of blindness in the over 50 age group in western society. Wet AMD can cause sudden loss of sight over a matter of days, fortunately it is less common than Dry AMD which is often described as “wear & tear”.

OCT can not only identify which type of AMD is present but can monitor progress, for example if you are undergoing treatment.

Macular holes are fairly rare but if caught early can be treated successfully. If untreated they affect the very centre of your vision.
OCT clearly shows even very early macular holes when they are invisible with conventional viewing techniques.

So, to summarise, here are the reasons that an OCT is recommended

  • The opportunity to have the most advanced technology screen the most important part of your eye.
  • Early detection of preventable changes.
  • Accurate comparison of your eye health from one year to the next.
  • Improved referral if necessary.

Back To School Eye Tests, Wilmslow, Cheshire

With the summer holidays drawing to a close over the next few weeks, here at James Doyle Opticians, Wilmslow, Cheshire, we are advising that parents should be adding an eye test to the list of “back to school” jobs that need to be completed for their children.

Research has estimates that a million children have an undetected vision problem, while almost 70% of UK schools do not have eye screening in what was described as "an absolute public health disgrace" by Bob Hughes, chief executive of the Association of Optometrists. "There are problems which can be corrected in young people's eyes and yet it's a buried issue, an unknown issue, that children are losing out on a good education because they can't see."

The effect of poor eye care on a child cannot be underestimated. Many children are diagnosed as dyslexic before it is realised they actually had a vision problem.

Children with sight problems will often struggle to learn to read. They find once their vision is corrected they are able to make sense of what is written in text books and on whiteboards, and the process of learning becomes a great deal more straightforward.

Ideally all children who are being diagnosed as dyslexic should have a full eye examination as a matter of course. Whilst it won't be the issue for all children, but it may be for some.

Many childhood eye conditions, such as lazy eye and squint, can be treated if they are picked up early as the eye and visual system are actively developing during the school years. Because of the way the brain adapts to information it receives, the children themselves may not be aware that they cannot see as well as everyone else, or may not be able to articulate their vision difficulties. Teachers can easily mistake a child struggling to see as having behavioural problems, whether they are socially withdrawn or attention-seeking and
over-boisterous.

There seems to be a wide lack of understanding about eye health.

At James Doyle we  would urge parents to remember taking their children to see the optician is just as important as the trip to the dentist or having their feet measured.

Call today to book your Back To School eye test on 01625 548848

Chanel Sunglasses - The Must Have Accessory

Chanel began in 1914, created by the style icon Coco Chanel who opened two boutique stores in France.

It is one of the few brands that has never gone out of fashion, never even faultered, and is coveted by the rich, famous and stylish the world over.

Credited with creating the quilted handbag, the 'No. 5' perfume, and the little black dress, The House of Chanel has led the fashion world season after season.

Recognisable even without seeing the famous double 'C' logo; Chanel style is timeless, fitting in with 50s and 60s glamour just as much as with today's modern woman.

Chanels sunglasses are typically dark - classic black features heavily - with oversize lenses.

They often take style cues from Chanel's other ranges - quilted sunglasses

and chain sunglasses are inspired by different aspects of Chanel bags.

Glaucoma Awareness Week
 - 9th to 15th June 2014

Action for Sight: Book an eye health check

This year’s National Glaucoma Awareness Week 2014 is urging people to take Action for Sight, and have regular eye tests.

Were you aware that people of African-Caribbean origin are four times more likely to develop the condition, and are more likely for it to appear earlier and for it to be more severe, when compared to people of European origin ?  However,  that does not mean that those of European origin should ignore their eyes, Glaucoma can strike anyone.

Early detection and treatment literally saves sight, as over 90% of individuals who are diagnosed early will retain useful sight for life. Despite such promising results, it is estimated that over 50% of cases of glaucoma remain undetected in the UK.

Awareness and regular eye health checks are critical. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness.

There are no early symptoms for the patient to be aware of and it isn’t until the condition is fairly advanced that people recognise that there is something wrong with their vision. Once vision is lost, it cannot be recovered. However, a simple eye health check can pick up the condition in it’s early stages and treatment, which most commonly includes taking eye drops, means most people will maintain sight for life.

Here at James Doyle Opticians in Wilmslow Cheshire, our visual fields tests and eye pressure tests are carried out as part of the standard eye examination, so the symptomless vision changes in early glaucoma are identified.

In addition to these tests, the more detailed process of laser scanning tomography can reveal the earliest and most subtle changes, for those with a family history of glaucoma.

So book your eye test today and make sure that you save your sight.

If you're on Twitter, you can search for National Glaucoma Awareness Week news with the hashtag #Glaucoma2014.

Beating Blepharitis

You probably haven’t heard of Meibomian Gland Disfunction (MGD) but you are very likely to have suffered from it at some point in your life, particularly if you are over 40 !

It is also known as Blepharitis.

So what are Meibomian glands and what do they do ?

Meibomian glands are glands that are arranged vertically within the eyelid near the lashes.   They can become blocked, resulting in a “pimple” on the inner surface of the eyelid.

Meobiam is a fatty substance, which is spread across the surface of the eye with each blink.  Its main function is to prevent fluid in the eye from evaporating, so when these glands become blocked our eyes dry out leading to that gritty, scratchy feeling and a reddening of the eye.

To unblock these glands and thus restore the optimal balance of the fluids in the eye, a combination of treatments is used.

We provide detailed information  about how the treat this condition at our dry eye clinics at our Wilmslow Practice, as well as stocking a range of products to alleviate symptoms.

As the Meibom is a fat based substance, heat needs to be carefully applied to the eyelid using a specialist Eye Mask. This should be done in conjunction with the application of specific drops to maintain a healthy level of moisture in the eye whilst the Meibomian glands are not functioning optimally.

It should also be noted that over the counter eye drops do not treat this condition effectively and can often make it worse in the long term.

A Sight for Sore Eyes

Do any of these painful eye conditions sound familiar to you?
  • Grittiness
  • Scratchiness
  • Redness
  • Excessive tear production
  • Soreness or irritation
  • Burning
  • Tiredness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Burning
  • Changes in vision

These may be symptoms of an underlying condition called Dry Eye.

They can be varied both in nature and severity and can also vary between different environments and tasks.

Sometimes these symptoms only occur in warm, dry, air conditioned environments or when certain tasks such as reading, using a computer or driving have been undertaken to a significant degree, disappearing once the cause of the problem is removed.  However, sometimes these symptoms persist, even once the trigger has been removed.

Getting an accurate diagnosis can be difficult as many patients do not associate these symptoms with eye dryness.

The good news is that if these symptoms sound familiar, help is available.

Firstly the exact cause of the problem needs to be established.

There is more than one form of Dry Eye.

The eye may not be producing enough tears, or the quality of those tears being produced may be reduced, or a combination of both.

Factors that can affect your tears can include

  • Diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and diabetes
  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • Skin conditions
  • Medications
  • Increasing age
  • Eye and eyelid infections and inflammations

What should I do next ?

Arrange an appointment for a Dry Eye Assessment with you Optician.

Here at James Doyle Opticians, Wilmslow we offer a dedicated specialist evaluation of your Dry Eyes. Your

appointment will involve the following steps
  • Taking down your health information and a medical history
  • Details of your symptoms and occurrence
  • Past treatments you have tried
  • Your tear quantity and quality assessment
  • Microscopic examination of the front of your eye
  • Microscopic examination of your eye lids
http://www.jamesdoyleopticians.co.uk/contact-us-2/

At the end of this assessment a treatment plan will be drawn up and discussed with you.  You will be given full instruction on how to obtain the maximum benefit from the treatments being prescribed, which you can easily administer at home and finally a follow up appointment will be arranged to monitor the improvements in your condition.

Dyslexia sufferers achieve amazing reading improvement using Colorimetry

When a child suffers from Dyslexia and has Irlens tendencies, their ability to decode words can be severely impaired, making reading very difficult, in turn, leading to them to fall behind at school.

In some cases, the use of custom precision tinted lenses can lead to a dramatic improvement in their reading ability.

For one such family, who are patients at our Wilmslow Practice, this has recently been the case and they are so delighted that they have shared their experience, in the hope that other families can benefit from this process too.

"We have had THE MOST AMAZING feedback re Tommy and Ollie with their specs.

Ollie's English teacher has said 'immediate and significant difference'

Tommy's y5 teachers have said (as of last night) ' immediate difference in focus and ability to concentrate. Amazing!'

Tommy's reading has seen a marked improvement and in general both boys have commented on their ability to 'think clearly' whilst wearing their specs.

Ollie has had a fabulous y9 parents evening report with lots if teachers commenting in his improved 'focus' since getting the lenses."

Blepharitis Treatment a success

Blepharitis means inflammation of the eyelids.

It can be a troublesome and recurring condition with no individual or one off cure. However, once symptoms have improved, daily eyelid hygiene can usually keep symptoms to a minimum and eyesight is rarely affected.

Here at James Doyle Opticians, Wilmslow we have had a lovely note from a long term sufferer with this condition, who has attended our Dry Eye Clinic.

Dear Mr Doyle

I wish to thank you again for the huge improvement to my chronic Blepharitis.

As you are aware, I have struggled with this condition for a number of years and tried many remedies, as advised, with very little, if any, success.

When my GP suggested I consult yourself, explaining that you were acquiring a reputation for improving this condition, I freely confess to my reluctance, given the length of time I have struggled to improve it!!

However, I did see you and the improvement to my Blepharitis has been enormous and I am delighted.

The treatment regime is rigorous and continues to be so, but in seeing the change to the condition of my eyes, is all the encouragement I need.

I continue to use each day the Flax filled eye bag. I use Blephasol many times a day to clean my lids, furthermore , I have Blephasol wipes to carry in my handbag. I also take a Flaxseed oil
capsule each day and continue to take, as prescribed, oral Tetracycline.

I wish you well and hope that more people will be able to benefit from your advice.

Yours sincerely

Mrs I.D.

Find the right lenses for you

Most glasses wearers spend their time shopping for the latest fashionable frames, not realising that, as with frame design, not all lenses are the same.

The thickness and design of the lenses affects how appealing your eyes will look, as well as how comfortable your glasses will feel, especially when you are wearing them for extended periods of time.

Nikon lenses feature patented technology to give you eyes picture perfect imaging without distortion and are best suited to high fashion frames.

Here is what Nikon say about the various lens options currently available:-

Find the right lenses for you

Ophthalmic lens technology has advanced to cater the varying needs of visual correction. There are many types of spectacle lenses to choose from to fit the conditions of wearer’s activities. If you need a spectacle prescription, there are several factors to consider when choosing the right lenses for you; which types of lenses to pick, the materials made in, and some optional coatings to maximize the comfort when wearing.

Step 1. Types of Lenses

The types of lenses you choose depend on whether you want the spectacles to suit all activities or single activity.

Single Vision Lens
If you are under age 40 and need a prescription glasses, then single vision lenses may be sufficient enough for your visual correction. Single vision lenses have the same focal power throughout the lens to provide a single focus.
Progressive Lenses (Multifocal Lenses)
Progressive lenses provide a gradual transition in power within the lens to view all distance from near at hand to far across the room. If you are in your 40s or older and have presbyopia, wearing progressive lenses have an advantage to see all distances clearly without taking the eyeglasses off and on.

Step 2. Lens Materials

Glass
Resistant to scratches. However glass lenses are heavy compared to plastic lenses and prone to breakage. It’s not recommended for children or those who are active in sports.
Standard Plastic
Standard plastic lenses, also known as 1.50 index is the most commonly used material for low power prescriptions.
Mid-Index Plastic
Mid-Index lenses range in material index from 1.53 to 1.56. This material is thinner and lighter than standard plastic lenses. Ask your eye care professional which material will be est for you based on your individual Rx and your selection of frame style.
High-Index Plastic
High-Index lenses are typically have a material index of 1.60. High index lenses are thinner than mid-index and an excellent option for drill mount frames.
Ultra High-Index Plastic
This category of lenses ranges in material index from 1.67 to 1.74, the highest index currently available. Ultra High-Index lenses are the thinnest and lightest materials currently available for higher power prescriptions. Ask your eye care professional what material will be best for you, based on your individual prescription and the frame style you select. Remember, the higher the material index the thinner the lens.

Step 3. About Coatings

Application of coatings provides various benefits for the wearer.
Anti-reflective coatings help transparency in the lens and glare from various lightings.
UV coatings protect eyes from absorbing harmful UV rays. Long term exposure can damage DNA and it’s cumulative and irreversible. The UV coating blocks the transmission of light in the ultraviolet spectrum.
Other optional coatings such as scratch resistance, smudge and water resistant surface applications extend the lifespan of the lenswear.

Dyslexia, Irlens Syndrome and how to help your child perform better at school

Is you child falling behind at school ?

Do you know which condition affects about 50% of dyslexics, as well as epileptics, migraine sufferers, people with ME and MS, and others ?

Irlens syndrome, like dyslexia, although not curable, if left untreated can lead to children falling behind at school. Often, significant improvements in reading ability can be made following a specialist eye test.

For people with dyslexia, Irlens can often be the cause of major reading difficulty.

At James Doyle Opticians we use a piece of equipment called an Intuitive Colorimeter to determine the exact tint of lenses that each individual patient needs to minimise their visual stress and thus maximise their reading ability.

Many children who go on to be diagnosed with Irlens syndrome are initially thought to lack motivation and are frequently told to work harder. In fact the opposite is true, the brain is in overdrive, with the child making extreme effort to try and cope with the symptoms.
