With the summer holidays drawing to a close over the next few weeks, here at James Doyle Opticians, Wilmslow, Cheshire, we are advising that parents should be adding an eye test to the list of “back to school” jobs that need to be completed for their children.


Research has estimates that a million children have an undetected vision problem, while almost 70% of UK schools do not have eye screening in what was described as "an absolute public health disgrace" by Bob Hughes, chief executive of the Association of Optometrists. "There are problems which can be corrected in young people's eyes and yet it's a buried issue, an unknown issue, that children are losing out on a good education because they can't see."

The effect of poor eye care on a child cannot be underestimated. Many children are diagnosed as dyslexic before it is realised they actually had a vision problem.

Children with sight problems will often struggle to learn to read. They find once their vision is corrected they are able to make sense of what is written in text books and on whiteboards, and the process of learning becomes a great deal more straightforward.

Ideally all children who are being diagnosed as dyslexic should have a full eye examination as a matter of course. Whilst it won't be the issue for all children, but it may be for some.

Many childhood eye conditions, such as lazy eye and squint, can be treated if they are picked up early as the eye and visual system are actively developing during the school years. Because of the way the brain adapts to information it receives, the children themselves may not be aware that they cannot see as well as everyone else, or may not be able to articulate their vision difficulties. Teachers can easily mistake a child struggling to see as having behavioural problems, whether they are socially withdrawn or attention-seeking and
over-boisterous.

There seems to be a wide lack of understanding about eye health.

■ NHS sight tests are free to children aged up to 18 in full-time education, and help towards the cost of glasses is available.

■ Children do not need to be able to read to have a sight test, as optometrists can use pictures instead of letters.

Glaucoma Awareness Week - 9th to 15th June 2014

Action for Sight: Book an eye health check

This year’s National Glaucoma Awareness Week 2014 is urging people to take Action for Sight, and have regular eye tests.

Were you aware that people of African-Caribbean origin are four times more likely to develop the condition, and are more likely for it to appear earlier and for it to be more severe, when compared to people of European origin ?  However,  that does not mean that those of European origin should ignore their eyes, Glaucoma can strike anyone.

Early detection and treatment literally saves sight, as over 90% of individuals who are diagnosed early will retain useful sight for life. Despite such promising results, it is estimated that over 50% of cases of glaucoma remain undetected in the UK.

Awareness and regular eye health checks are critical. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness.

There are no early symptoms for the patient to be aware of and it isn’t until the condition is fairly advanced that people recognise that there is something wrong with their vision. Once vision is lost, it cannot be recovered. However, a simple eye health check can pick up the condition in it’s early stages and treatment, which most commonly includes taking eye drops, means most people will maintain sight for life.

Here at James Doyle Opticians in Wilmslow Cheshire, our visual fields tests and eye pressure tests are carried out as part of the standard eye examination, so the symptomless vision changes in early glaucoma are identified.

In addition to these tests, the more detailed process of laser scanning tomography can reveal the earliest and most subtle changes, for those with a family history of glaucoma.

Beating Blepharitis

You probably haven’t heard of Meibomian Gland Disfunction (MGD) but you are very likely to have suffered from it at some point in your life, particularly if you are over 40 !

It is also known as Blepharitis.

So what are Meibomian glands and what do they do ?

Meibomian glands are glands that are arranged vertically within the eyelid near the lashes.   They can become blocked, resulting in a “pimple” on the inner surface of the eyelid.

Meobiam is a fatty substance, which is spread across the surface of the eye with each blink.  Its main function is to prevent fluid in the eye from evaporating, so when these glands become blocked our eyes dry out leading to that gritty, scratchy feeling and a reddening of the eye.

To unblock these glands and thus restore the optimal balance of the fluids in the eye, a combination of treatments is used.

We provide detailed information  about how the treat this condition at our dry eye clinics at our Wilmslow Practice, as well as stocking a range of products to alleviate symptoms.

As the Meibom is a fat based substance, heat needs to be carefully applied to the eyelid using a specialist Eye Mask. This should be done in conjunction with the application of specific drops to maintain a healthy level of moisture in the eye whilst the Meibomian glands are not functioning optimally. 

It should also be noted that over the counter eye drops do not treat this condition effectively and can often make it worse in the long term.
